A lot of Kdramas bring tears of laughter to viewers. But, most of them are Rom-Coms. Are there Comedy Korean Shows to watch but Little to No Romance? Yes!

Here’s a list of not-so-rom-com Korean Shows including K-dramas and K-movies that will surely make you chuckle, giggle, and laugh out loud LOL!

1. Welcome to Waikiki (Seasons 1 and 2)

Synopsis: Fueled by dreams of filmmaking fortune, three young men – Dong Goo, the aspiring director, Joon Ki, the energetic salesman, and Doo Shik, the talented screenwriter – join forces to open a guest house named “Waikiki” in the vibrant Itaewon district. Their quest to fund their film takes an unexpected turn as they navigate the hilarious chaos of running a guest house, all with a little help from a quirky cast of characters: Seo Jin, Dong Goo’s ever-supportive sister, Yoon Ah, a single mom with a mysterious past, and Soo Ah, Dong Goo’s ex-girlfriend with lingering feelings.

Welcome to Waikiki is a popular comedy k-drama that you would almost see it in every k-drama recommendations and that speaks for itself. It’s a slice-of-life comedy which is actually funny because the comedies are not ‘akwardness’ or ‘cringeness’ unlike other sitcoms.

What truly distinguishes this show, aside from its humor, is the characters. They are imperfect individuals who possess both endearing and frustrating qualities. While they may occasionally act selfishly or make mistakes, their resilience and support for one another are admirable. Through their mutual efforts, they encourage each other to grow and improve as individuals.

Overall, this show is a fantastic choice that features authentic characters who evoke a range of emotions (love, disdain, empathy). The relatable challenges stem from financial struggles and the characters’ aspirations to achieve their dream professions. Additionally, the comedic moments are sure to make even the most solemn audience members laugh. Lastly, never forget Rebecca!

2. Work Later, Drink Now (Seasons 1 and 2)

Synopsis: Three single women in their thirties – Ahn So-hee, the witty broadcasting writer, Han Ji-yeon, the calming yoga instructor, and Kang Ji-gu, the energetic YouTuber – unwind and forge a strong bond over after-work drinks. They’re often joined by Kang Buk-gu, a TV variety show PD, who adds another layer of fun to their lively gatherings.

My Ratings: A+

This under-the-radar K-drama is a hidden gem! The very first episode had me snorting with laughter (seriously, prepare for hilarity!). What I really love about this k-drama is that it’s more than just three ladies getting drunk almost every day.

As the story unfolds, you’ll delve into the rich backstories of each character, making them all incredibly relatable. What truly shines is the powerful bond between the female leads, a friendship that will have you yearning for your own squad.

3. 6/45 (Korean Movie)

Synopsis: A gust of wind snatches a lottery ticket, carrying a South Korean soldier’s dreams of sudden wealth across the Demilitarized Zone. Now, separated by barbed wire and ideology, he must strike a deal with a North Korean soldier who holds his ticket to fortune.

My Ratings: A+

Featuring all of the well-known Korean comedy master actors—Go Kyung-pyo, Lee Yi-Kyung, Kwak Dong-yeon, Lee Jun-hyeok, and Lee Soon-won—6/45 is a hilarious masterpiece. The plot is exciting as it revolves in a military base setting between two opposite parties.

The “negotiations” between the South Korean and North Korean soldiers are really hilarious! The interactions of the characters are so funny because they are bickering with so much passive aggressiveness. How they solve their problem—sharing the winning price of the 6/45 lotto—surprisingly opens up new opportunities and relationships along the way.

4. Gaus Electronics

Synopsis: Gaus Electronics dives into the hilarious world of Marketing Team 3, a group of coworkers at a giant home appliance company. Juggling demanding jobs and office shenanigans, they navigate the ups and downs of corporate life while building strong friendships and maybe even finding love along the way.

My Ratings: A+

This k-drama is an adaption of the Gaus Electronics webtoon. I this it’s a very underrated comedy series. It’s a slice of life mixed with comedy. Each member of Marketing Team 3 has a humorous personality, and their relationship as a team is very funny.

Some watchers, especially working individuals, can surely relate to the hardships and stress of marketing products. Although, they made the issues comedic, which could help the viewers to have a good laugh. Yet, this K-drama has two couples that you’ll find amusing because of the series of misunderstandings that lead them to be in a relationship.

5. Boyhood (K-Drama)

Synopsis: A shy teen named Byung Tae, worn down by years of bullying, seeks a new beginning in a rural school. However, his peace is shattered when a hilarious misunderstanding paints him as the school’s toughest fighter, forcing him to keep up the act.

My Ratings: B-

South Korea’s 2023 web series, Boyhood, takes viewers on a coming-of-age journey with a twist. Starring Kang Hye-won, Im Si-wan, Lee Sun-bin, and Lee Si-woo, the drama tackles the familiar theme of teen life, but throws in a surprising curveball.

Synopsis: Dong-hyun, a high school student, accidentally falls from a rooftop and collides with Pan-soo, a passerby who is part of a criminal gang. When they regain consciousness in the hospital, they realize that they have swapped bodies.

My Ratings: A-

This is a great movie! It’s funny, heartwarming, and keeps you engaged the whole time. The story is fresh and exciting, a body-swap movie unlike any other. It’s got action, interesting characters you can’t help but love, and fantastic acting that brings them to life.

8. Luck Key

My Ratings: D+

This is a sequel of the previous movie—The Pirates (2014). This pirate flick is a total gem! Packed with laughs and thrills, it’s beautifully shot with a killer soundtrack. The cast is fantastic, especially Han Hyo-Joo and Kang Ha-neul. It’s lighthearted, hilarious, and perfect for an enjoyable escape. Overall, I highly recommend this movie if you’re looking for an action-filled movie with humor.
